Multi-billion-dollar Meta lawsuit can proceed, US Supreme Court rules

A multi-million-dollar class action lawsuit against social media giant Meta can go forward, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Friday.

An appeal of a lower court ruling was dismissed by the nation's high court, allowing the lawsuit to proceed.

Investors of Facebook parent Meta sued the company, arguing that it did not disclose how users' information would be used by Cambridge Analytica, a data firm that supported Donald Trump in 2016.

Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said, “The plaintiff’s claims are baseless, and we will continue to defend ourselves as this case is considered by the District Court."

The company already paid $5.1 billion in fines and a $725 million privacy settlement with users.

Cambridge Analytica was run by Trump ally Steve Bannon, and it paid Meta for user data of its 75 million users in order to target voters.
