Republicans on the cusp of retaining House majority
As of Monday morning, Republicans were on the cusp of officially retaining their majority in the House with several more races being called or conceded over the weekend.
Incumbent Rep. Yadira Caraveo (D) conceded Colorado's 8th District in the suburbs of Denver to Gabe Evans on Sunday to bring the GOP to 217, one shy of the 218 needed for the majority.
There are nine House races that have still not been called. One of those is in Alaska, one is in Arizona, and the other seven are in California.
Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) said of the race, "At the end of the day, we're going to hold the majority, and I think that speaks to the bigger point, which is that the American people want us to act" on issues like border security and the economy.
With a definite Republican majority in the Senate, Jan. 3 will mark the start of a Republican-led Congress that will only be bolstered by Donald Trump's inauguration to a second, while separated from the first, term in office.
Several of the nine races are currently led by Republicans, and they only have to win one to secure the majority.
