Republicans win majority control of the US Senate
Not only did Republican voters come out to the polls with enough strength to take back the White House, but they also managed to flip several crucial U.S. Senate seats.
The number of seats flipped was enough to secure Republican control of the upper chamber for the next two years, setting up a potential legislative honeypot for President Donald Trump and GOP lawmakers.
Many of the Democratic senators who were ousted were holding seats in red states. GOP candidates stormed them, taking just enough to cement majority control of the Senate.
Not only did they manage to flip critical seats, Republican Senate candidates managed to hold on to their seats in states like Florida and Texas.
Democrats and their backers spent mountains of money in an attempt to hold on to majority control of the Senate, but ultimately failed to do so.
NBC News noted:
Democrats had hoped their slate of incumbents and heavy outside spending by allied groups would help overcome headwinds in those red states. But ultimateldy the force of political gravity won out.
The next big question is who will lead the new Senate when the new session of Congress begins next January. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) had previously vowed to step down as leader after several bizarre medical episodes.
NBC News added:
The GOP senators are expected to elect a new leader next week as longtime Republican leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., is stepping down from the role after a record 18 years. His current deputy, Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., and former deputy, Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, are battling to take the job when the new Congress begins.
Thune, the GOP whip, released a statement regarding his party's massive Senate majority win.
"The Biden-Harris administration has forced the American people to endure four years of high prices, open borders, and chaos on the world stage," Thune's statement read.
He added, "Tonight, with Republicans reclaiming majority control of the U.S. Senate, we can begin to turn the page on this expensive and reckless chapter of American history."
"We will restore the important role of Senate committees and reestablish the regular appropriations process,” he continued.
“And we will return power back to the members; there will be no more backroom deals or forced votes on bills without adequate time for review, debate, and amendment.”
Only time will tell what Republicans will accomplish with their newfound power. Hopefully, it's not wasted.
