An Economist/YouGov poll released last week showed that 78% of independent voters think President Joe Biden is a weak president, while 76% said the economy was in poor or bad shape.

Not one of Biden's numbers with independents is favorable, including 68% who say America is on the wrong track, 64% who disapprove of his handling of jobs and the economy, and 54% who don't think he's handling his job well.

Independents are an important voting block that often decides elections. This group is more likely to deviate from both parties and form more seemingly objective opinions.

Most independents, 63%, don't want Biden to run for a second term, but he has already made the decision to do so.

Former President Donald Trump holds a small lead over Biden when independents were asked which candidate they would vote for if the election were held today.

Trump has pulled ahead of Biden in the general election in other polls as well, but it is very early to be looking at these numbers more than a year and a half out from the general election.
