59-year-old Rex Heuermann arrested in connection with horrifying Gilgo Beach murders

59-year-old Rex Heuermann was arrested on Thursday and charged with three counts of first-degree murder in connection with the horrifying Gilgo Beach murders that were committed over ten years ago.

The Gilgo Beach case has been cold for years, and many suspected that the monster responsible had gotten away. Heuermann was arrested just under a half an hour away from the place where 11 sets of human remains were discovered, and it is strongly suspected he is responsible for all of them.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul issued a statement on Friday saying, "Yes, the day has finally come when someone so … depraved of heart who would kill individuals, innocent individuals in the prime of their lives, their young lives, is finally brought to justice. We are hoping that this will bring justice to this individual but also peace to the families."

Currently Heuermann is facing charges for the deaths of Melissa Barthelemy in 2009, as well as Megan Waterman and Amber Costello in 2010.

Investigators are investigating if Heuermann is connected to any other cold cases as some suspect he is.

Right now, there are strong indications that Heuermann is the one responsible for the disappearance of Maureen Brainard-Barnes in 2007. However, Americans will have to wait and see what is revealed as the legal process moves forward.
